This story grew out of a character and outline originally developed by Michael Walsh, who also illustrated the book. While writing, I was schooling myself in British, Jewish, and wider European folk traditions—including The Mabinogion, a collection of medieval Welsh tales from the 12th and 13th centuries. Many of these stories revolve around journeys that lead characters into realms beyond their everyday reality—something that deeply inspired the tone and structure of this book.
Another writer I was reading was Isaac Bashevis Singer, the Nobel Prize–winning author whose magical storytelling and ability to weave the mystical with the everyday had a strong influence on how I approached this narrative. His stories, often rooted in Jewish folklore and the supernatural, helped shape the spirit of this book.
It was written to be shared between parents and children—something to enjoy together. An initial print-run of 300 copies was released and sold in Manchester, Bristol, and London.
